U.S. Open Tour Truck Report: Monday

Johnny Wunder is calling on all his sources for the inside scoops from the tour trucks at Winged Foot ahead of the U.S. Open.

Pull up a seat at the table for a full plate of equipment info.

From the Ping tour truck

  • Louis Oosthuizen had some fresh Glide 2.0 “Stealth” wedges built (50-SS, 54-SS) with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts
  • University of Texas standout Cole Hammer tested some new Anser style putters
  • Eddie Pepperell added a whole set of Glide Forged wedges (52, 56, 60) (KBS Tour 130X shafts)
  • Joaquin Niemann is testing a G410 7-wood (20.5 degrees). Graphite Design AD DI 80 X shaft as well as an i210 (3-iron) with a Graphite Design AD DI 85X Hybrid. He’s looking for a 240-yard club.
  • Cam Champ is testing a G410 hybrid (19 degrees) with a Fujikura Ventus Blue 10 X shaft.

From the Titleist tour truck

  • Jimmy Walker is testing a new TSi3 5-wood (18 degrees @17.5). Fujikura Ventus Black 9 X shaft.
  • Charlie Howell is now in the TSi3 driver, 3-wood, 7-wood. The driver has an MCA Tensei White AV Raw 65 TX, 3-wood has a Fujikura Atmos Black 7 X, and 7-wood 8X.

From the Callaway tour truck 

  • Lots of fresh wedges for the incoming Euro contingent
  • Tom Lewis is testing a Diamana D+ Limited 60TX in his Maverick Driver to tighten dispersion up a bit.
  • Xander got his lofts and lies checked and dialed.

From the TaylorMade tour truck 

  • Jon Rahm added a fresh new 60-11 degree MG2 TW wedge.
  • Rasmus Hojgaard switched into a SIM fairway from SIM Max to add some loft helping him turn it over a bit easier.

Free Agents

  • Justin Rose added P770 4 and 5-irons with Project X 6.5 and is testing the 6-iron.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
