Long iron vs hybrid? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing playing a 3 and 4 iron vs 3H and 4H. WRXers explain which option they prefer and why, with lots of interesting takes offered up.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • bnperrone: “Gotta go with what you like. Hybrids should be played like irons in terms of ball position, etc. I’m assuming they’re as well fit to you as your irons. If you’re already doing that and you don’t like them, then there’s no reason you shouldn’t just order the irons to match what you have. When hybrids came out, they were pitched as being universally better, but a lot of people can’t get comfortable with them or spend years of trial and error to find the one that works for them.”
  • St Jimmy: “If I mishit a hybrid it hooks uncontrollably left out of bounds. If I mishit my 3 or 4 iron, it comes up short.90% of the time short is better.”
  • oldpalchamp: “I’ve been playing golf for a long time. Used to carry a 1-iron. Had a 2-iron in my bag for years. First time I hit a hybrid, I thought it was cheating. They are just soooo much easier to hit than long irons. They launch higher and land softer. The longest iron in my bag. currently, is a 4-iron, and that is going to be replaced with a hybrid shortly.”
  • MinimalistGC: “When I was playing a hybrid with a 3i the Hybrid was about an inch to 1.5” longer, and that did very well, but eventually the little demon WRXers got in my head and convinced me to hate hybrids, but the 3 hybrid and 3i were both in my bag and covered different yardages. I ended up just putting in a hybrid shaft (cut down to 3i length) in my 3i, and that helped a lot. Maybe think about buying a g710 3/4i and play with that. It’s all about what you like.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
