What GolfWRXers are saying about using a SGI iron as a driving iron

Published

on

@golfalot

In our forums, our members have been discussing using a SGI iron as their driving iron having seen Rickie Fowler with two SGI clubs in the bag at Seminole. WRXer ‘Z1ggy16′ is considering getting a “SGI 4i, flattening it a bit and slapping some heavy Graphite in there as my forgiving fairway finder.” – and asks for WRXers’ experience in doing similar.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Valtiel: “I have a pair of ’16 M2 Tour long irons, they are pretty killer. I just find the biggest pain is the amount of offset and the fact that SGI irons tend to be cast, which are harder to bend. Performance-wise there are tons of great options to be had cheaper, as you’ve found, and as long you’re ok with the aesthetics then they are gold.”
  • mattavery727: “I’m currently using a Srixon Z585, and it’s much cheaper than buying a driving iron and performs great. Being forged it feels good too.”
  • dcmidnight: “I have a Sim Max 4i bent to 18* and a 5i as well – nothing but good things to say about them. I am going to reshaft the 4i with a Steelfiber as well when I get around to it. The head itself is great, no complaints and it was probably 1/3 the price of some other 18* ‘driving irons’.”
  • Myherobobhope: “If you just want to save money, check out sub 70… I was in the market for a cheap utility iron, and they knocked it out of the park. I love mine. $115 all in with a midsize grip and graphite shaft.”
  • ChipNRun: “Not an SGI head, but I made my game-improvement CB Pro Tungsten friendlier by reshafting it with a SteelFiber hybrid shaft (see below). I picked up about 10 yards off the tee, and can now hit it from a decent fairway lie. With the original KBS Tour 90 shaft, the 4i was iffy off the fairway.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
