The wedges GolfWRXers with a 10-18 handicap are playing
In our forums, WRXer ‘jjfcpa’ has dedicated a thread to non-set wedges and wants to know what fellow members in the 10-18 handicap range are playing. Per ‘jjfcpa’, he plays “a 54* MD5 W Grind (12* bounce) for my sand wedge with Project X Catalyst 80 graphite shaft and a 48* MD5 S Grind (10* bounce) as my approach wedge.”
Our members have been mentioning the wedges they’ve plumped for and how the wedges have helped them lower their scores.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- platgolf: “I am bouncing around(pun intended) between SM7’s and Glides. I pulled the 50* Glide for a Vokey, but find the Glide more forgiving on long shots, so back in the bag it goes. I really like the 58* Vokey D grind and 12* bounce. I need more time on the Vokey 56* F grind w/14* bounce sand wedge.”
- mantan: “Cleveland CBX2 wedges. Absolute game changers for me. My instructor had suggested the originals, and I was lukewarm to them. After working on my short game a lot last year, I bought the 54*. I quickly ran and got the 50*. Cleveland did a great job of creating a cavity-backed wedge that is great on full shots and excels in the short game. I just got the CBX Full Face 58* (need to update the signature). I haven’t had a chance to actually hit it yet.”
- BPetry: “Vokey SM 8 48* gap, SM 7 52* approach, and SM 7 56* sand. They gap perfectly with my 44* Cobra Forged Tec 2020 PW. Wedges have always been the best part of my game. I have used Mizunos and Callaways in the past but always keep coming back to Vokeys…”
- pduvie: “Currently my handicap is 15.3…I was using Vokey SM7 but went back to my favorite wedges…CBX2 52, 56 and 60…I am more confident with these wedges, I used to play with CBXs, and now I have returned to CBX2…I really love these wedges.”
- VictoryValiant: “Currently playing MD4s with varying bounce and grind: 52° – S grind (10° bounce), 56° – W grind (12° bounce) and 60° – X grind (12° bounce). Debated upgrading to the MD5, SM8 or Glide 3.0, but will likely wait.”
- Subsonic: “Cleveland CBX. 54 and 58. Love them. They are game-changers for my short game.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
