GolfWRX Spotlight: Lamkin Calibrate Series grips

Published

on

Golfers are always looking for ways to create greater consistency in their game. Whether it be through repetition in practice while using training aids, or just beating balls and working on fundamentals, we all know that more consistency leads to a more repeatable swing and playing better golf.

When it comes to fundamentals, it’s well understood that the grip is by far one of the most vital in creating the starting point to make a great swing. The new Calibrate Grip series from Lamkin aims to help golfers achieve greater consistency without ever having to beat balls at the range.

Lamkin Calibrate Series grips: The details

Calibrate is a fresh take on the traditional rib or reminder grip that places a noticeable protrusion along the backside of the grip to help get your hands in the same position shot after shot. For many players, it’s not just about getting them lined straight up the back of the club either, there are many players that prefer to have the grip orientation slightly changed during the installation process to promote either a strong or weaker grip too—something that is 100 percent within the rules of golf.

From Lamkin: “Calibrate Technology is a pioneering design integrated into the inner design of the grip. As the grip is installed on the shaft the inner reminder expands to create a spine on the underneath of the grip. Because of its engineering the rib characteristics will feel smooth in the hands yet definitely remind golfers how to properly set their hands. Results… better and more consistent shots.”

The Lamkin Calibrate series offers three distinct designs

ST+2: Utilizes Lamkins Smooth Tack Genesis Material along with infused cord to increase traction and create long-lasting all-weather performance. It also features a reduced taper (+2 wraps) designed to also offer greater comfort and control. Available in both standard and midsized.

Sonar Plus: Manufactured using Lamkin’s Genesis Material, the Sonar plus provides a solid feel that maintains tackiness in all weather conditions and also lasts longer than traditional rubber. It also has “Fingerprint Technology,” which is a micro-texture pattern on the surface of the grip to create more traction. Available in standard size only.

Sonar Plus Wrap: The Sonar Plus Wrap is the softest of the three grips in the Calibrate line and will appeal to traditionalist that love the feeling of a wrap style grip. Like the Sonar Plus, the Plus Wrap is constructed from Genesis Material and offers “Fingerprint Technology” to create more surface texture and help reduce player grip pressure. Available in standard size only.

Considering how a new grip can greatly alter how your clubs feel and perform, a small investment—ranging from $8.49 to $10.99 per grip—is a small price to pay.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
