Today from the Forums: “Fairway Woods – Titanium vs Steel Face performance difference”

Published

on

Today from the Forums, we take a look at a discussion on fairway woods and the difference between titanium and steel face performance. Forum member, ‘games’ gravitates towards titanium FW’s and asks fellow members whether there is a noticeable difference in performance and what steel face models could turn his head.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • jvincent: “Pure speculation, but it may be easier to have improved COR across the face with titanium. Also, since it is lighter than steel the weight distribution will be different with the Ti faced woods having more discretionary weight to move away from the face.”
  • Cachaulo: “If you get a chance to hit some of the new FW options I think you will be pleasantly surprised, even ones with steel faces. I was stuck on a couple of 10-15-year-old 4W options, and when I finally hit a G410 3W, I was blown away…I think the forgiveness and the CG placement makes these things stupid-easy to hit and longer as well.”
  • ohioglfr: “Titanium wood heads tend to be a little larger compared to steel, which may add confidence to high cappers. As to face material, I love the sound of a maraging steel face. Whether titanium is superior to steel or vice versa, I suppose it ultimately depends on specific design elements like trampoline effect, strategic face thickness, etc.”
  • MBBG: “I agree with some above that in a true FW there is a diminishing return for TI faces. I’ve had a bunch of different JDM heads with variable face thickness forged TI faces/cup faces and also the TM model from last year. Aside from differences in feel and sound the newer maraging high strength steel faces seem to hang in there pretty well in all aspects.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
