Today from the Forums: “Expensive golf clothing you sprung for and were pleasantly surprised with?”
Today from the Forums, we get WRXers impressions on expensive golf apparel they were hesitant about buying because of the price, which proved to be an excellent investment. A wide range of gear gets the thumbs up from our members, with both Lululemon and Bonobos’ items, in particular, receiving plenty of praise.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- jas904: “Lululemon. After I wore my first pair, I stopped wearing all of my other golf pants.”
- DFW Snowman: “Bonobos. The pants are pricier than I would normally buy, but I have worn them for golf, work, and they are especially great for travel. And they last. I have a couple of pairs of the highland pants that I have easily worn over a hundred times each.”
- Bill Broderick: “I’ve been very impressed with everything that I’ve bought from Proquip. After getting some mid-layer and wind outerwear via one of their mystery box sales, I ended up buying lots of other clothing from them. I’ve especially been impressed by their rain gear.”
- ctfuzz21: “I picked up the RLX Cashmere Golf Hoodie this past fall. Thought it was kind of ridiculous, but grabbed it at a fair discount. So, impressed. Wear it often and get tons of compliments!”
- kerrlybill: “I’ll have to add another vote in favour of lululemon. Their pants, shorts and polos are great. The ABC slim pants might be the most perfect clothing item I have ever purchased. I even picked up a couple down jackets this year to wear in cold weather. Their stuff is worth every penny, especially when you consider their warranty. I also want to give an honourable mention to JL. I have shirts with dozens of wears. They still look brand new. The collar hasn’t changed shape by even a millimetre, and neither has the rest of the shirt. No fading whatsoever. They don’t cheap out on their fabric.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Straight Down pullovers. Perfectly cut in the arms for golf and perfect weight for cool days. Looks good off course too.

I can attest to Lululemon. My wife works for them and my whole golf wardrobe consists of their gear. I never would have given them a second thought if I didn’t get if for free, but everything I have is excellent. I also wear their sweat pants, shorts, and hoodies to the gym which are all great as well. Their underwear kinda suck though.
