Forum Thread of the Day: “Lob wedge for tight Bermuda?”
Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from BCULAW who is on the lookout for a versatile lob wedge which will prove useful on the baked out Bermuda fairways he sees in central Florida. Our members discuss what options BCULAW should consider, with plenty of different wedges and strategies mentioned.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- flyingmeese: “I keep a 60* Cleveland 485 RTG in my Florida bag at my in-laws’ house. It’s perfect for the southwest Florida conditions – played with a square face its low bounce, but its got a wide sole and works well out of deep rough and bunkers if I open it up.”
- b.mattay: “Vokey v-grind! Narrow sole with 20 ish degrees of bounce on the front edge for square face shots!”
- 2_PuttBirdies: “The new 2019 PM Grind is great off of anything. Been playing for 20 years and it’s the best wedge I’ve ever used.”
- mrbh: “For those looking for low bounce/wider sole earlier in the thread, try the Cobra King lob wedge in the “wide/low” option – 4* of bounce but wider sole. It’s worked very well for me, and the width means it still works well out of bunkers.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

This is almost silly. Florida conditions are never tight Bermuda – at least not if you have ever played in the West where the low humidity gives you really tight Bermuda. As both previous posters state, conditions inFlorida (not just Sarasota) are so damp that the soft conditions require at least some bounce.

If you want to play in South West Florida you don’t want low bounce I like e in Sarasota and play professionally. You need a mid to mid high bounce it gets burnt but always stays somewhat wet beneth the surface

I lived in Sarasota from 2007-2014. I completely agree. If you’re going into the grain on tight bermuda the shot requires precision with any club, but additional bounce is always your friend in that situation.
