Forum Thread of the Day: “Tiger Woods’ decision to switch to lighter shafts in his woods”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from jadedenill who created the thread to discuss Tiger Woods’ recent move to lighter shafts in his driver and woods. Our members explain why they feel Woods may have decided to do so prior to the Players Championship, with plenty feeling the 14-time major champion is trying to pick up a little more speed.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the full discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • BM5D: “Probably more of a feel thing. I went from 87 to 63 last season, and I can say for sure you feel faster which can have the effect of promoting a smoother swing. With an 87 gram shaft, it felt like hard work late in the round to put a good swing on the driver. This led me to swing too hard and hit balls where the bears live. The lighter shaft for me promotes a smoother, faster swing rather than a harder swing if that makes sense.”
  • Z1ggy16: “According to a recent TXG podcast, they think it’s more due to Tiger aging and probably starting to lose a little speed with heavier shafts. Going lighter could help get some speed back and maybe improve flight a little bit. Unless the Trackman in the past few weeks has been off, I noticed Tiger only getting mid 160’s ball speed when hitting his 3w. Could have been intentional but I’ve seen him in the 170s before. Maybe the old numbers were juiced up a little bit, who knows.”
  • PowderedToastMan: “He went lighter because he can control his rhythm and tempo with the woods now, not just with heavy shafts. While everyone here was bashing Notah’s commentary, he mentioned this during the match play.”
  • nova6868: “He has done this before right? At one point he was playing AD-DI 6x with lots of tipping.”

Lighter shafts are great. My Irons are about 70gms while driver shaft is just 37gms.

Maybe it’s all that slow lateral movement in his swing???

Regular shafts, lighter shafts after 40. Don’t kid yourself.

Slowly, but surely, TW is rightly adopting finesse over power.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
