WRX Spotlight: Under Armour Spieth 3

Published

on

Product: Under Armour Spieth 3 golf shoe

Pitch: From Under Armour: “Using a data-driven approach, UA and Jordan worked with J.J. Rivet, a leader in biomechanics at the European Tour Performance Institute, incorporating  unique scientific insights into the torqueing and rotation of the golf swing to inform the patented traction technology in the shoe. A uniquely built outsole that uses a carbon fiber plate for stability on one side and extra flexibility on the other side of the foot for maximum ground impact is just one of many innovations that makes the Spieth 3 dazzle and impress.”

Our take on the Under Armour Spieth 3

UA’s Spieth 3 shoe aims to deliver on improved grip, control and stability, and deliver it has. Working together, the low-profile Rotational Resistance Spike and Softspikes Silver Tornado in the Spieth 3 trump its predecessors in improving traction and allowing you to create a stronger base in order to generate that extra power comfortably, while still maintaining your balance.

Another reason for the improved traction is its lower profile and weight. The Spieth 3 is five ounces lighter than the Spieth 2, and its lower profile sets you closer to the ground, giving you that definite feeling throughout your downswing that your feet are gripping the turf.

As previously mentioned, the Spieth 3 shoe is notably lighter than the Spieth 2, and as well as the benefits this provides in terms of greater feel through your swing, the comfort levels surpass those of the former editions of the shoe significantly. Jordan Spieth wanted to create a golf shoe that was more trainer like, and the reduction in weight has gone a long way to achieving that. The shoe features a tongue which wraps around the top of your foot, and along with the extra padding at the heel, it provides you with about as comfortable and as well-fitting a golf shoe as you’ll find.

The style of the Spieth 3 is also a winner from my perspective, with the Spieth 3 containing a simple color scheme while still maintaining a modern look. Personally, the more subtle white/gray look of the Spieth 3 is preferable to the louder Spieth 2, and it also goes a long way in providing that trainer like aesthetic which the shoes namesake aimed at providing.

The additional woven jacquard sections of the shoe were added to both reduce weight and improve vertical support. While the worry with woven jacquard sections is always the difficulty in removing stains, Spieth has previously stated to Golf.com that he’s been using them in the gym for quite a while.

“I wear them every day, a couple of them are like two or three years old, the laces are all messed up, but they’re my favorite Under Armour shoes that I use in the gym doing the moves that I train for my golf swing,”

So while the concern might be there, Spieth’s comments suggest that there really isn’t anything to worry about from that aspect and also that the level of comfort you feel when you first try them on is unlikely to leave for a long time. The fact that the shoe is waterproof despite the vast reduction in weight suggests that the Spieth 3 is as tough and durable as the 25-year-old suggests.

In terms of achieving all of its goals, from its trainer look, enhanced comfort, improved feel, traction and performance, the Spieth 3 just about nails it. Available to purchase for $200, the Spieth 3 shoe will likely be a must for any golfers who were fans of its predecessors, and with the new features and sharp look, it’s likely to get the attention of those who have never tried an Under Armour shoe previously.

The way Jordan has been struggling perhaps he should try wearing Foot Joys?

I could never bring myself to wear a Spieth shoe, but my pair of UA Match Play are nearly identical and the best shoe I’ve ever owned. Big fan.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
