Forum Thread of the Day: “Best players distance irons?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from bober74, who asks fellow GolfWRX members for their opinion on what are the best players distance irons. Bober74 is looking to drop one club from his bag, and our members have weighed into the discussion, offering him advice on what they feel are the best options on the market.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say on the subject at the link below.

  • bladestriker: “I am testing out the Callaway Epic pro right now, and I can say they are the silliest long irons I have ever hit. I am playing 3-aw in them then drop to a 56 and 60 Vokey without gapping issues. I don’t know if they are worth the price yet, but my mid to long iron game has ‘leveled up’.”
  • three-times-a-charm: “Apex CF16. No contest. Beats the P790 as well….actually, the CF16’s beat the P790 in timeline as well since they’re a year older.”
  • cyr67: “I’m throwing Srixon Z565’s into this players distance iron debate. They’re not marketed as such, but they are absolutely in this category.”
  • chisag: “I was not in the market for a “distance iron” at all. Not even on my radar. But I hit the P790’s at a demo day for fun and just fell in love with the forgiveness, lower spin and consistency, both in trajectory and distance.”

Rogue pro. Probably the most forgiving/ distance/ feel combo, similar but more forgiving than p790. It’s the exact chassis of the Apex pro, and $300 less than the 790. Cup faces beat speed foam any day. All you 790 people out there report back when your foam degrades and starts rattling around like the ICW taylormade from the 90’s.

T-MBs. Hit them crazy high and they look great.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
