“Playoffs? Don’t talk about… playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game!”

Whoops, wrong sport. The guys on the PGA and Web.Com tours all made the playoffs, so what happened this weekend meant the end of the season for some, and the continuation of a dream for others. The European Tour won’t begin its 3-week playoff run until November, but there are Ryder Cup points and picks still to be earned and made. Oh, and there’s that winning your national open thing for Canadians. It has been 75 years since a fellow won the male version, but the female streak (alive for 45 years) is over.

Northern Trust win for DeChambeau set Ryder Cup prognostications in motion

A number of golfers could have caught Bryson DeChambeau on Sunday, but none were able to go lower than Tyrrell Hatton’s 64. A day after shooting 63 to establish a 4-shot lead, DeChambeau closed with 69 at Ridgewood country club, for a 4-stroke victory over fellow Ryder-Cup aspirant Tony Finau. The Californian began the day with birdies at the first 2 holes, then made a pair of bogeys on the way to the turn. The latter act served only to offer hope to the chasers, but DeChambeau wasn’t having any of it. He played the inward half in 3-under par to reach 18-under, earning his third PGA Tour victory and second of the 2017-18 campaign. Finau’s lone Tour win came at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open, but the Utahan (or is it Utahn?) took major leaps forward in 2018 with challenges at the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. As with DeChambeau, it won’t be a surprise to hear Finau’s name announced in early September, as one of the Captain’s Picks for the USA Ryder Cup side.

Italy on fire in European golf with Pavan’s Czech win

The margin between Padraig Harrington and Andrea Pavan was razor-thin all day Sunday. The Irish champion began the day with a one-shot advantage over the young Italian, but their pairing created lore that will be discussed around the Albatross golf club for decades. Each golfer made one bogey on the final day, so the scorecard’s tale came down to birdies. Until the 12th hole, Harrington was up, 4 to 2, in that category, and enjoyed a 3-shot advantage over his counterpart. For some unknown reason, Pavan caught fire like Francesco Molinari last month at The Open, gaining strokes on 4 of his next 6 holes. Combined with Harrington’s sole bogey on the 15th, Pavan made up 5 strokes over the course’s closing third. One would never have guessed that the 29-year old from Rome had never won before on the European Tour. Harrington will have to wait for win #16 on his home tour, but for @AndreaPavan89, the longest wait is ended.

Canadians everywhere sing “Oh, Brooke”

Canada’s Wonderland, an amusement park just north of Toronto, is set to debut a new coaster called the Yukon Striker. They might want to christen it “Brooke” instead. After all, the darling of Smiths Falls, Ontario, sealed the first native win of the Canadian Open in nearly 50 years with a massive 64 on day four. Never mind that Mo Martin shot 62 for the low daily prize; Henderson won the tournament that meant the most to her and her country. She did what had come so hard for these last few years: slept on a lead and brought home the prize. The 65 wasn’t flawless; two bogeys accompanied four birdies on the outward half. On the home stretch, when she had to be better than the rest, she was. Henderson birdied holes 12-15, then capped off the inward 31 with an emphatic birdie at the last. Angel Yin stumbled early, but regrouped to claim second alone, four behind the champion at 17-under, and two shots ahead of third place finisher Jennifer Song. For @BrookeHenderson, something that last happened 25 years before she was born, is now hers to cherish.

Web.Com playoffs begin with Columbus win for Streb

It wasn’t too long ago that Kevin Kisner and Robert Streb were touted as two of the out-of-nowhere guys on the PGA Tour. Each had won without fanfare, but the two took different paths after that. Kisner has challenged in multiple majors, while Streb found himself on the Web.Com tour, grinding to return to golf’s silver screen. On Sunday, Streb took a large step toward returning to former glory, with a playoff victory over Peter Malnati at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Ohio. Malnati played inspired golf all week long, wearing the yellow Titleist bucket hat of longtime friend, the late Jarrod Lyle. He made 7 birdies and 2 bogeys on Sunday, good for 66 and 12-under. Streb ground out a back-nine B game and matched Malnati’s number. The playoff was over quickly; Malnati drove into the rough and made bogey, while Streb was able to make par at 18 for the victory.

Champions Tour motors through Boeing fly-by win for Parel

Scott Parel didn’t make all the birdies on Sunday at Snoqualmie Ridge, but he probably stole enough from Ken Tanigawa, Scott McCarron and Kevin Sutherland, to prevent them from making any sort of charge. Parel made 7 birdies on his opening nine, including 6 straight from 4 through 9. His only bogey on the day came at the 10th hole, but he followed that with 3 more birdies on the back, reaching 63 for the day. Meanwhile, Sutherland and Tanigawa, coming off respective Saturday rounds of 60 and 64, could not buy a birdie. Actually, that’s an understatement. The threesome missed every possible putt in every possible way, ensuring that no one would stand in the way of Parel’s come-from-behind victory. Parel had one win on the Web.Com Tour, back in 2013, but until Sunday, he had yet to win on the Champions Tour. With a par at the last, he finished at 18-under par, 3 shots clear of runner-up Kevin Sutherland.
