TaylorMade launches TP Red Putter Collection to be sold at retail

Published

on

TaylorMade set the putter industry on fire with its all-red Spider Tour putters when Jason Day found incredible success on the greens while using one. In response to public demand, the company sold a retail version, and then eventually released the Jason Day replica version. Sergio Garcia also used the Spider Tour Red putter to win The Masters, and it seemed, for a short time at least, that you couldn’t win on Tour if you weren’t using the red Spider.

During the red-Spider craze, TaylorMade also released a line of premium, classic-style putters called the TP Collection. Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose and Garcia each employed different versions of the TP putters at various times throughout 2017.

Recently, we’ve seen prototype putters pop up in the bags of Jason Day and Justin Rose, combining the TP Collection name and styles with the all-red color design that made the Spider Tour putters popular; a new, hybrid of designs, if you will. In August, Rose began using a red Chaska prototype, and Jason Day has been spotted recently using a red “Ardmore 2” prototype putter.

Now, and seemingly again in response to public demand, TaylorMade has launched a TP Red Putter Collection that will sell at retail. The collection consists of five different Ardmore models, and one Chaska model — nearly identical to the one Justin Rose has been gaming. The heads are made from 304 stainless steel, and they’re made with different sightlines and hosel designs for different player preferences, and to ultimately help the player achieve better alignment.

Each of the putters has a head weight of 355 grams, 3.5 degrees of loft, a 70-degree lie angle, and comes available in either 34 or 35 inches. The putters have interchangeable sole weights to adjust mass, and the faces come with TaylorMade’s popular Pure Roll insert, which is made from 6061 aluminum and has grooves that sit at a 45-degree angle to help impart optimal spin.

The TP Red Collection putters will be available on September 29 for $219 (MSRP) each, and they come stock with SuperStroke Pistol GTR 1.0 grips.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
