NCAA, “64” and Caddyshack Stampings at the John Deere

Published

on

One-off and custom engravings are rampant on the PGA Tour, and as reported by the New York Times, the craze can be mostly traced back to Aaron Dill, Titleist’s club builder out on Tour.

Surely traditionalists roll their eyes at such things, but stampings don’t seem to be going away as more and more players are welcoming them onto their wedges.

On Monday at the 2016 John Deere Classic, we saw two engravings that caught our eye, and one well-earned custom putter.

All golfers will recognize this as a popular quote from Caddyshack, the most quoted movie of all time (on the golf course).

Here’s another wedge, with all sorts of references to the number 64, which is the amount of degrees of loft on Rhein Gibson’s super lob wedge. If you can’t figure out some of the references, one of our GolfWRX forum members tried his hand.

And it’s my guess that LXIV is simply the roman numeral value for 64. While the stamping on the sole is sweet, Gibson’s caddie can’t be too happy who has to scrape dirt out of the letters after every divot.

Aaron Wise, who won the 2016 NCAA Individual Men’s Golf Championship, also won the team portion of the event with his University of Oregon Ducks. Odyssey presented him with a Golden replica of the putter he used to win (an Odyssey White XG #5) at the the John Deere Classic.

A great memento for Wise, and an awesome gesture by Odyssey.

See more photos of Wise’s putter here.

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
