Callaway adds Gold Nickel finish to MD3 wedge line
If you’re currently in the market for new wedges, you couldn’t have picked a better time. The wedge space is chock full of grinds, finishes and lofts — the options and varieties are seemingly endless.
And a leader in this space is Callaway with its Mack Daddy 3 (MD3) Milled line. Recently, it just extended the line with three new loft-grind options, and now, the company has announced that a new Gold Nickel finish will be made available as well.
The Gold Nickel finish — adding to the Black Satin and Satin Chrome finish options — will be offered in lofts of 50, 52, 56, 58 and 60 degrees, with the Standard-grind (S-grind) and in right-handed only. The S-grind suits golfers who play in a variety of different playing conditions, as this grind is Callaway’s most versatile offering.

Like the rest of the MD3 wedges, the new finish will have what Callaway calls “progressive groove optimization,” which means that the lower-lofted wedges have narrow and deeper grooves like irons, while the higher-lofted wedges have wider grooves for increased spin around the greens.
The MD3 Milled Gold Nickel wedges will be available on July 1 for $129.99 and on Callaway’s website.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

I prefer 2012 Callaway Forged Wedges. A bigger head with a straighter leading edge.
