Special edition: Revealing photos from the Shriners Open

Published

on

GolfWRX was live this week from the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. If you missed any of the galleries, make sure to click the links below and enjoy:

The photos at the PGA Tour event this week were unprecedentedly overshadowed by one gallery in particular. We’ll get to that at the end, but for now let’s reveal some photos from the Shriners.

Rickie changes it up

Rickie Fowler put the new Cobra King Forged MB irons in play this week at the Shriners, along with the new King Cobra Driver.

It appears his new irons, like his previous irons, incorporate a special use of tungsten plugs as shown in the center of the back cavity of his irons in the photos.

Here’s a glimpse at the specs of his driver head.

Also, he’s using the Matrix Reign Prototype shaft that he played for most of 2015 in his previous gamer, the Cobra Fly-Z+.

Shout out to the South Paws

Titleist has its new Vokey SM6 wedges out on Tour in a left-handed version. Every time you think golf companies have turned their collective backs on the south paws, they do something like this and completely redeem themselves. Mark it down as a win for golf companies and wrong-side slappers alike.

See more photos of the Vokey SM6 wedges, also available in right-handed options.

We spotted a Fujikura Speeder Evolution II shaft on Tour this week, which is made from 90T carbon fiber, has metal composite technology and a vibrant new color scheme.

Roll dice, lose (or win, but mostly lose) money, drink martinis and fraternize with devil women. For some, Scotty perfectly captured the essence of Las Vegas with this head cover.

The main event: Butch Harmon’s memorabilia mecca

While out at the Shriners Open, Butch Harmon allowed GolfWRX access to his shrine — the Butch Harmon Golf School at Rio Secco Golf Club also located in Las Vegas. If you love sports, golf history, golf memorabilia or nostalgia, this is one of the coolest galleries we’ve ever posted on GolfWRX.

I’ve selected a few of my personal favorites photos from his collection below, but I highly encourage you to browse the full gallery here.

Tiger standing with the U.S. Amateur, The Masters, U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship trophies. Utter dominance of golf.

Judging by the shirt, this photo was taken after his 1993 Open Championship victory. Norman didn’t win nearly as many majors as he should have, but don’t forget he still has two Claret Jugs.

I’m not sure if this specific photo was chosen by Tiger on purpose, but while he was working with Butch, he was basically winning with his eyes closed.

Butch also keeps a collection of memorabilia from other sports as well. My best guess is that they’re athletes who have gotten a swing tip or two from Butch. This autographed jersey from Willie Mays, “The Say Hey Kid” is my favorite, but there are a few others you shouldn’t miss.

See the full gallery here. It’s worth it.

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

We may be able to see the tungsten plugs if all the photos didn’t require GolfWRX watermarks in the way

The watermark isnt that bad and its totally reasonable for all the pictures to have them. And the tungsten weights are easily seen in both pictures posted. No reason to complain. Just be happy we are able to get these awesome pictures.

The point still stands… the logo messes up the photo details.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
