Callaway Big Bertha V-Series Fairway Woods

Published

on

Callaway’s new V-Series fairway woods are designed with “Speed Optimized Technology,” making them lighter and more aerodynamic to promote more ball speed and distance.

The fairway woods use the same Hyper Speed Face design that helped Callaway’s X2 Hot and X2 Hot Pro fairway woods receive top billing in our 2014 Gear Trials: Best Fairway Woods list, and also have a high-launch design that make thems one of Callaway’s most forgiving fairway woods. Like Callaway’s other fairway woods, they use the company’s Modern Warbird Sole Plate to improve turf interaction.

The V-Series fairway woods are available in 3, 5, 7 and 9 woods, as well as in a “Heavenwood” that has 20.5 degrees of loft and measures 43 inches. That gives it more loft than a 5 wood, but it has a longer shaft that can help golfers hit their shots farther.

The fairway woods come stock with a Mitsubishi Rayon 2nd Generation Bassara E-Series 52 shaft in light, regular and stiff-flex options and sell for $239.99 each.

Anyone hear rumors of another Callaway line expected to come out shortly, after this line? I heard photos are already online.

I did a range demo of the 3-wood last week and didn’t like it. I didn’t get any pop at all off the face. I also hit the SLDR and G30 3-woods and liked both of them better. The SLDR was a little tougher to control but when you dialed it in, it was excellent.
The G30 was the best of the one’s that I tried. Easy to hit, nice adjustability. I haven’t made a purchase yet and will try a few more.
The Callaway was the worst by far…not sure why because the X-Hot is a beast.

I’m crushing it 250-260 off the deck and off the tee with a stock stiff shaft. Maybe the mid-kick shaft isn’t for you though.

They’re out now. I just received my Heavenwood yesterday. I’m taking it out this weekend for a test drive.

I totally agree. Callaway is horrible considering they have Phil. I went to the Callaway store in Las Vegas looking to buy wedges and the sales man told me I could order them. They don’t stock them… It’s a callaway only store.

Totally agree left handed golfers not well catered for by Callaway, ping are much better for lefties. Like the look of these but I notice there are no pro versions they all have square faces, and not keen on the stock shaft, but I like the sole and the shape of the head looks good.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
