Miura custom grind order- Step by step documentation Phase 1 & 2 added

Published

on

Well I did it. After years of reading how soft these irons are and only hitting them a few times I finally made the plunge. I ordered a set of Miura irons and wedges. If some of you don’t know me… I love irons. I am a iron collector and it is my passion.

In an effort to make these the perfect set of irons for an obsessed iron aficionado I went to no limits. I asked Miura to add a sole grind for the wet and soft conditions we see in Michigan. I also asked if they could do an all white paint fill. Lastly I asked if they could stamp the irons with my initials (in this case Y3 for the three y’s in easyyy). They said of course. At that point I rolled my eyes and shook my head a little. Then a grin slowly showed up on my face and off the races we went.

For years Miura has forged heads for TaylorMade and other OEM’s. For tour staff pros and retail. I always knew when the top brass for the best equipment companies want to trust a forging house to make the heads for the best players int he world it went to Miura. That made me want them even more. I used to lurk on E-Bay for that special set of “Tour Issued” TMag 300 forged “Lehman grind” irons that I knew Miura made for the Tour guys. They were made in satin or chrome and had different grinds and offsets for the players.

The Father Katsuhiro and his two sons Yoshitaka and Shinei still run the company in Himeji Japan. The passion for excellence is tradition and well documented.

I will be documenting the process the best I can. I ordered the set last month and today I received some pics of the early grinding. I asked them if they would be so kind to take Pics of the process to document this. They said yeas and also asked if video could be used. I said of course!!!

I will add pics every time I get new ones for the next weeks during the build. Here are some of the specs…

3-pw 501 cb (w/ leading edge sole grinds)
“Y” Grind 53* wedge
“K” Grind 56* wedge
I might also add the 7-pw in a blade
Asked for all white paint fill
Satin finish
y3 stamped on them (3 is cubed for the three y’s in easyyy)

They are being made now in Japan. Here are the first pics form today. I am trying to find out who that is that is grinding them.

Phase 2 Stamping-

Ok here is the stamping pics. I asked for a different stamping than my initials. I asked for “Y3” to look like the 3 is “cubed” so it is smaller to represent the 3 y’s in easyyy. So I expected them to stamp the Y and than with another stamp the 3. But it looks like they made a custom stamp. Knowing Miura they did this for a few reasons. Only a guess…

One they didn’t have a small enough 3
the font needed to match the font on the cavity
they wanted the spacing to be exact

I just love this stuff… Click here to see more pics and read the discussion in the forums

Here are some pics. They said the heads are being plated right now and should be back in a few days to a week.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
