New Bridgestone irons spotted at Firestone

Published

on

Check out the photos we shot of new irons from Bridgestone, which we spotted at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone.

According to our sources, the irons are scheduled to be released in the near future in Japan. Members of the Bridgestone staff were on-site at Firestone to collect photos, as well as shoot a product video with Bridgestone Staff Player Matt Kuchar.

It appears from the photos, however, that Kuchar may have been shooting a product video for a different set of irons.

Neither Kuchar, nor any other tour play in the field at Firestone hit any new Bridgestone irons on the range.

The new irons have a wide sole and deep undercut cavity, which is not a match for the type of irons played by Bridgestone’s key staff players, Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker, Fred Couples, Matt Every and David Love III. But the irons did have Aerotech Steel Fiber Composite iron shafts, which are used by Kuchar, Snedeker and Couples in their irons.

    The other ones look cheap.

Those (the ones Kuchar’s holding) look exactly like 2013 Tourstage 709 MC, 709 CB and 909 Blade. Fantastic looking clubs. I’ve got a set of the 709 MC (the middle one) and they are pretty nice.

OEM’s put crap on the heads to como them up. Like the car guys do. So the spies can’t get true pictures. My Bridgestone rep said no new anything. I knew right them, everything is going to be changing. New balls come out when the PGA Show happens end of Jan 2014. Look for the new irons & woods to come out then also.

Aesthetically, the cavity backs miss the mark for me. The progressive set looks nice but reminds me a lot of the Macgregor Pro MT Combos. Which, honestly, may not be a bad thing.

A set of blades, like the set DL3 games, would be money.

I play J40 CB and love them – 5i thru PW, then forged Clevelands for wedges. Forged blades feel so good. The ones in Kuchar’s hands look like cool progressive forged. The ones in the other pics look like they are not forged so what is the point?

Bridgestone Pro Line irons are forged. Precept does the cast stuff. Why do you say they look cast? How can you tell form the pics?

Im really hoping for a new bridgestone blade! I play the J40 CB now and really like them. But i Would really like a set of blades!

Compared to other manufacturers I think the steel in Bridgestone and Tour stage is of better quality than off the shelf titleist for example.

Keep up the good work Bridgestone!

They’re BLANKS. Not badges, no lettering.
I guess Brudgestone are going to digitally Photoshop the future graphics onto those blanks when they make the final decision on the look. Very interesting.

the cavity looks like US version of Tourstage GR irons, the one Kuchar holding looks like the new Tourstage Xblade series.

Looks like they have varying degrees of muscle back or cavity back on those. Very nice indeed. My fave forged iron so far is the J40 CB. If Bridgestone can improve on those, my i20’s better look out! (You hear that i20’s? You had better behave!)

Not the same irons Kuchar is holding. Kuchar is holding a new progressive cavity set.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
