Woods starts strong at The Open

Published

on

Tiger Woods fans had to be nervous after he hooked his tee shot well left of the fairway on Muirfield’s opening hole.

It was a bad sign from the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer, who had not competed in a tournament since the U.S. Open because of an injured left elbow. But Woods spent the rest of his round proving to the golf world that his elbow was feeling fine, and that he brought his “A Game” to East Lothian.

Woods shot 2-under in Round 1, which was highlighted by a stretch of three birdies on four holes on Nos. 10, 11 and 13. He had a new Nike VR_S Covert Version 5 driver in the bag in Round 1, but he chose not to use it, opting to hit shorter clubs off the tee and depend on his renowned long iron play.

That iron play, as well as Woods’ ability to hit his putts the proper pace on Muirfield’s lightning fast greens, allowed him to shoot 69, one of the best rounds from a golfer in the afternoon wave.

Woods currently sits three shots back of Zach Johnson, who finished 5-under.
