Miura adds options for lefties

Published

on

Lefties rejoice! Miura Golf has expanded its lineup of left-handed clubs to include the new Limited Forged Black Blade Irons and Black Wedges.

The flat-black finish is designed to produce no glare while still maintaining the appropriate texture. Over time, the finish “ages” to create a unique look for each golfer. The irons are available in 3 iron through pitching wedge, and can include an optional 2 iron, while three wedge lofts (51, 55, 59 degrees) are available.

The Limited Forged Black irons and wedges add to the current nickel (satin) chrome options available for left-handers, but do not include the cavity back model. Utilizing the same design as these popular models, the flat-black option is sure to draw attention.

Adam Barr, president of Miura Golf and former host of The Golf Channel’s “What’s in The Bag?” understands that limited models have been available for left-handers and stated that his company “wanted to let them know that we have their best interests at heart — and on the drawing board.”

The irons and wedges are designed and formed in Himeji, Japan, by master craftsman Katsuhiro Miura and his sons Yoshitaka and Shinei. Although popular on the Asian Tour, Miura Golf has less of a presence on the North American circuits. Nevertheless, many pros and amateurs recognize that the handcrafting process by which Miura Golf creates clubs one by one results in a top-quality product.

The pure feel when hitting a Miura club comes from its special forging process designed to keep the fine grain of the steel uniform and free of bubbles and voids. In addition, the “spin-welding” process that Miura Golf uses creates a consistent bore depth and hosel height on every iron, which results in a perfectly centered shaft.

Never heard of Miura Golf? According to the company’s website, Miura does not pay tour pros to use its clubs, therefore the use of their clubs by many top pros is on a voluntary basis. With multi-million dollar equipment contracts now common, it is the ultimate compliment to the design and performance of a Miura golf club when a tour pro plays it for free.

Both the irons and wedges are now available through official Miura dealers with a suggested retail price starting at $265 per iron and $235 per wedges with custom options are available.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
