Couples tabs Love III as assistant captain for Presidents Cup

Published

on

Wednesday afternoon, Fred Couples took to the podium at Murfield Village — site of this week’s Memorial Tournament — to make an announcement that came as a shock to very few people.

He announced that his long-time friend Davis Love III would join Jay Haas as his assistant captain at the Presidents Cup, which will also be held at Murfield Village Oct. 1 to 6.

Couples alluded to the very close relationship he and Love share stating, “He is one of my closest friends,” and later saying that it is Love’s invaluable relationships with the American players that make him such a valuable piece to what Couples hopes to be a fifth consecutive win for the American side at the Presidents Cup.

In reaction to being named as an assistant coach, Love was very excited to be able to be a part of the team saying,

“I’m so excited to help Freddie out as a captain’s assistant,” Love said. “He helped me out a lot during the Ryder Cup, and I’m really excited to come to a Presidents Cup at Muirfield. This is going to be an incredible venue for the event. And it will be fun to be back in the team room with the guys again so soon. I hope to play alongside potential U.S. team members a lot this year and help Fred out that way since I’m on Tour more than he is. But I’m happy to help out in any way I can — drive the cart around, keep up with the towels, whatever he needs. I’m just glad to be a part of the event.”

This will be the ninth time Couples and Love have represented the United States at the Presidents Cup together, and second time the two will have coached together. Couples acted as one of Love’s assistant captains at last years Ryder Cup.

Both Love and Couples are well known around the golfing world for their laid-back and fun-loving domineer, something that will ensure the mood remains light in the American locker room during the tough times that both teams are sure to face when they return to Murfield in October.

For those looking to join the American and International teams at The Presidents Cup tickets can be purchased online with weekly grounds passes on sale for $210 while passes to the Captains Club seating area will run you $360, and free admittance to those under 12 when accompanied with a paying adult.

It’s “Muirfield,” “Davis” (not David), and “demeanor.”
    Yikes.

      Hey Zeke,

Thanks for the feedback! Sometimes no matter how many sets of eyes look at something mistakes still slide through!
