Justin Rose suggests this adjustment is behind him driving the ball longer than ever at 45
Justin Rose is back in action this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am having dominated the Farmers Insurance Open to win by seven strokes.
The 45-year-old is showing no signs of slowing down, with his driving distance in 2026 averaging a total of 308.7 yards – which is up almost seven yards from last year and ten yards more than when he won his sole major back in 2013.
Ahead of this week’s event at Pebble Beach, Rose was asked what has made the difference, with the Englishman suggesting that strengthening his grip may be behind the impressive improvement:
“Yeah, I think I’ve started hitting the ball a little further the last maybe six months. Not really sure why or how.
Maybe it’s more of a technical thing, like a little shift in my grip, just slightly strengthened it. Was quite weird how the brain is like OK, going to move more positivity through the ball from a rotational point of view. That seemed to make a difference.”
Rose added:
“I think I manage my game really, really well generally. I think there’s still a lot of gaps, which I’m excited about. I think I can really get better with my short game, I think my iron play can still be better.
But the overall package is there. I feel like I’m just good in the big moments really. I feel like that’s the thing, I’ve been sort of maybe mentally better when it’s counted more, which obviously that’s what golf’s all about really.”
Rose gets his opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am underway today at 1.16 PM ET.
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
