Players with a hybrid as longest club after driver – what do you use? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing using a hybrid as their longest club after driver. WRXer ‘gentles’ is thinking of going away from fairway woods as “I just don’t get along with them”, and reaches out to fellow members who have decided to use hybrids as their longest club after driver.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Steelman1991: “Similar experience, though not high speed swinger. Could use persimmon woods when younger, but always struggled with metal woods off the deck so it used to be driver, then 3 iron. Tried Ping Anser hybrids years ago in 3 hybrid. Loved it and quickly bought a 4. A few years later found a used 2 Anser hybrid and that’s been my set up since…2, 3, 4 hybrid. Works for me as I have confidence in them that isn’t there with fairway metals. Downside is a lack of an alternative from the tee, though the 2h does a decent job, and eagle opportunities on par 5s. Although with the current baked fairways in the UK, most are back in range!”
  • kamura: “I go from a G400 max to 3H g425 to Mizuno 4 FliHi to 5iron. I got the 3H the earliest and it’s been my favourite club. I don’t even bother with any woods as I know I won’t hit them well and the gapping will just be all over the place.”
  • stratgolf: “I’ve previously been this guy, but recently stuck a 3HL in the bag and loving it.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
